Symptoms of Diabetes

Diabetes is a malfunction that alters the capability of the body in the use of digested food for energy. Sugar taken in is broken down into a simpler form which is known as glucose. This glucose then circulates in the bloodstream where it waits to enter cells. Insulin is a hormone produced by the Pancreas. It is the insulin that transports the glucose to the cells.

A proper functioning pancreas regulates the proportion of insulin based on the amount of glucose present. Diabetes hinders the process mentioned above causing the sugar levels in the blood to be on the higher side. There are different types of diabetes namely Type 1, Type 2, Pre-Diabetes, Juvenile diabetes, and Gestational Diabetes. Let’s take a quick look at the symptoms indicating the above mentioned types of diabetes.

In Type 1 kind of Diabetes the pancreas fails to produce the proper amount of insulin in order to control the blood sugar level. Some common symptoms seen are fatigue, abdominal pain, nausea, increased thirst, increased urination, absence of menstruation, vomiting and weight loss despite increased appetite.

Juvenile Diabetes is similar to Type 1 Diabetes and the symptoms are very much the same. Type 2 Diabetes is a condition wherein the body does not respond appropriately to the insulin released by the pancreas. Common symptoms seen in this form of Diabetes is frequent or slow-healing infections, blurred vision, erectile dysfunction, fatigue, increased appetite, increased urination and increased thirst. Gestational Diabetes is a condition where the blood sugar count is on the higher side and which starts or is first detected during pregnancy. Common symptoms can be identified as increased thirst, nausea and vomiting, fatigue, blurred vision, frequent infections including vaginal and skin, increased urination and weight loss in spite of increased appetite. Pre-Diabetes is also known as “impaired glucose tolerance” and there are no symptoms for this form of Diabetes.

In short, diabetes is not a condition to be taken lightly, this can happen at any age group and sex category. It is not restricted to mankind only but can attack animals as well your pet dog that you may have at home. However, do not let it scare you as early detection and timely treatment can prevent, control or completely do away with it.

Diabetes in Dogs

In many cases there is a development of canine diabetes seen in young dogs. This is very abnormal. There are many symptoms exhibited if the if the dog is 4 years old. There is a valid possibility for diabetes that time. Diabetes in dogs is very common in females.  Many symptoms of these can be compared to the diabetes in humans.

Symptoms that may be exhibited by the dog:
1. The beginning of canine diabetes is marked with obesity. However, this case is not the same all the time. Sometimes the case may be genetic as well.
2. Diabetes in dogs usually happens when they are 7 to 8 years of age.
3. There is a lot of likelihood of diabetes developing in larger dogs as compared to the smaller breeds.
4. Many a times it is marked with extreme thirst. The water intake of the dog should not be limited. This is very important as the dog needs lot of water for keeping dehydration away.
5. More thirst leads to more urination.  Sometimes the house trained pets may be susceptible to many accidents as he doesn’t have to habit to haul around so much weight in the bladder.
6. There is a must to urinate and a thirst for water.
7. Sometimes considerable weight loss may be observed in dogs.  Even though extra intake of food is taken, signs of excessive fatigue are seen.
8. Partial blindness may also be experienced by the dogs. Thus, he has a difficult time seeing.

Symptoms can be prevented by the following:
1. The carb intake of the dog must be limited. Just like humans, weight increase is caused by many carbohydrates. This contributes a lot to diabetes. There are many widespread dog foods in which more than 98 percent of carbs are contained. The dog breed must be learnt.  One should ensure that he should get all the essential ingredients. A change should be made to healthier dog foods.
2. Exercise is great. Diabetes in dogs can be prevented if they are active and avoid being overweight.  This is surely the owner’s job.  If the dog gains weight and is immobile, diabetes can be developed even though he is not a breed which develops genetic jeopardy.

In spite of all this, it can be said that there are no specific cures for canine diabetes. Sometimes, it may last for a very long time. One must try his best to keep the weight of the dog down.
